PEONY - OH SO BEAUTIFUL

Did you know you could freeze flowers and they maintain their beauty? Actually with all the projects I've done in my life I would think I would know you could freeze flowers and flower petals.

You are probably wondering why anyone would want to freeze a flower. Good question. In my case I would like to make a video of petals falling but don't want to strip all the flower petals off the flowers ... so instead I will wait until the petals are about ready to fall from the flower, then freeze the petals for future use. In the meantime, I will enjoy the beauty of the flower and the amazing fragrance as in the peony.

I have to say the quirky thought of keeping a frozen peony all year is appealing to me. Reminds me of the children's story "Frederick" by Leo Lionni where the mouse gathers thoughts of the summer colors to bring back in the cold winter days. As one would assume, unfortunately, the flower thaws almost instantly when taken out of the freezer so the frozen flower is totally unpractical unless you want to photograph it instantly upon taking it from the freezer or see it each time you open your freezer as a reminder of the beauty of spring.

Now to make a motion card with the peony flowers.... too beautiful to not do so.... more to come!

What Happened to the Dyed Easter Eggs?

Take a bite out of a chocolate rabbit... or guess the flavors of the jelly beans as you pick them out of the synthetic grass we have become accustomed to for the Easter nests. As kids we would run around frantically to find the most colored eggs......a real egg or plastic eggs! Are real eggs hidden at Easter becoming a thing of the past and now being replaced by plastic eggs? I had to search at the grocery store for the egg dye and there were no towers of egg cartons that would indicate the interest in dying eggs. Now I can't say I have dyed eggs for several years so obviously I'm just a little out of step with the times as to Easter eggs it appears.. at least in this town.

Now, here I am with the suggestion of sending an Easter E-Card. What... have e-cards replaced the good old fashioned paper cards sent by snail mail? No, I think not.... many of those who previously sent paper cards will continue to send cards by snail mail but many of us who were never good at getting greeting cards mailed timely or in fact only did so only at Christmas, if we were really together, now enjoy the ease of sending e-cards and actually have fun doing so for the animated cards are entertaining to watch and fun to customized and send.... For those of us who want to do our share by making "Green" choices for the planet ... e-cards are definitely the answer! No trees being cut down for the sake of sending an e-card!

Did you see the Spring card with the twin baby lambs? The babies were only a couple days old when I took the video of them at an eco-farm in a town nearby. Notice the wobbly legs? One baby was left behind after she wouldn't wake up to play with her twin who kept nuzzling her. Once she got up and figured out how to move her legs, I was the only thing she could see nearby. As she wasn't able to focus as yet, she walked toward me thinking I was her mother.

Only did she realize I wasn't her mother when she was but a few feet from the camera. My lucky day!

For a totally different sensibility check out the humorous eggs in the carton ( yes, this is why I was dying the eggs). I had to put myself mentally in the egg carton as an egg... lol... well,

how else does one create the emotion to go with the story line of eggs in a panic? I liked being the diva egg in the dozen with my dandelion hat.

Music and dance movements are great for the spirit... add a hula hoop and oh... la la! Gotta love this video e-card.... Discovering this talented soul dancing to her own tune was a wonderful moment for me. Her willingness to allow me to video her for a card was a gift for all of us.

I return to this card and play it just to lift my spirits, especially in the long winter days, and I send it to my friends to share the spirit.

Charming Food Characters

Gourd characters.... who would have known a pile of gourds would take me on this adventure!

All started out when I went to the farmer's market on Saturday and found a wonderful selection of colorful gourds begging to be discovered. I questioned myself as to what I would do with them and how I could use them for E-MotionCards. Answers didn't come, however, I've learned to trust my creative process...... I just get out of the way and let it all unfold. I found myself creating characters and actuallty laughing at myself for doing so. Quite honestly, I still don't know exactly how these characters will find themselves in e-cards but I trust ideas will come. In the meantime I am totally enjoying this escape into the world of "Gourdy" and "Ms. Go-Go-Gourdy"?

I'll keep you posted on this frivolous adventure in the land of gourds! In the meantime check out the new cards on E-MotionCards.

One day I pulled the lounge chair out to take a short siesta; a rest in the warmth of the sun. There I laid for about ten minutes until the phone rang. After answering the phone I went out to lay in the sun a few more minute, alas, my chair was occupied. Yes, Potter had

decided to try it out obviously assuming what's good for me is good for him.

Potter my muse.... my constant inspiration.... but wait...... on this sunny summer afternoon I was his inspiration. Now you and I know that he would have been worlds warmer than I as he laid there with his dark thick coat on but he had to try it for himself..... sounds familiar doesn't it.

STOP MOTION Father's Day Fun

Visualizing the stop motion is such a challenge, honestly, I find if I don't visualize the project too much and I just start out..... is rather magical how the piece comes to life.... well, at least most of the time I am pleasantly surprised but then there are always times I toss it all out and start anew. Learned long time ago it is just as important to know when to let go of an idea and move on as it is to think of ideas to begin with. How many times have there been aspects of a creative project I felt way too precious to let go of so continued working on the entire piece only to realize I had to let go of the that area for the success of the piece.

Behind the scenes for this new piece: I pulled out every little prop I had that could relate to Father's Day.... and I have a lot of small props as my niche at one time photographically was small sets. For two days I experimented with different ideas and then I realized I had to scrap the ideas using the props and just use Play-doh in a creative way.... so I started out and and this piece came about.

The new Father's Day card I happen to be working on is so much fun I wish I could just keep adding to it for quite some time. Of course, it would be too long for an e-card but I just love how in the process of making this card there is so much laughter around me.

When was the last time you literally kicked your heels up? Yes, that is what I am asking friends, neighbors and strangers walking down the street to do as I take a video of them. We all laugh and it is an excuse to be very playful.

Hopefully in a few days I will have the Kick'n your Heels card uploaded. Get ready to laugh!

How many times do we realize the person we are looking at or speaking with also has insecurities just as we do?

Well...... ok..... maybe theirs are different than ours or maybe they have less or more than we have but we all have them don't we. By sharing a part of oneself with others we not only feel better about ourself but the other person feels better too and the world is a friendlier place. I like the idea of the world being a friendlier place but sometimes stepping up to the plate is... oh so difficult, if you know what I mean. Whew!

A new day with the idea of writing whatever thoughts come floating by... not just about e-cards or creativity but also sharing those fleeting thoughts, obscure realizations, awareness... or perhaps frivolous dialogue.

Today I've thinking about - a lifetime of otherness. Strange way of expressing a thought I must say. Was thinking of all of the experiences I bring with me today. Not being young, not being middle-aged but beyond, I've enjoyed and lamented many experiences in my lifetime - the experience of joys and sorrows inherent with life and those unique to me - my otherness.

Ahhh yes..... I am thankful for the diversity of experiences I've had and those experiences make great memories. I can entertain people and create laughter in the storytelling of my experiences.... but it is the dreams and aspirations that are of importance. Dreams come from our spirit to create. Dreams inspire. Dreams keep the youthful spirit within us alive.

There are not words to convey the beauty of this moment in time.... yesterday I thought I was a bit weary of the snow storms and the ice we have had to deal with..... today my spirit soared with peaceful thoughts and awe as I was constantly drawn into this magical scene around me.... taking only one step out of the house I was instantly taken to another place - one of quiet beauty and transformation....... a place I will keep forever in my memories..... a place in which the memory is a gift.

I do believe Christmas chaos is familiar to all of us who have enjoyed the celebration. Geez, I really think without the chaos it wouldn't feel like Christmas. The planning, the gift buying, the decorations, the tree, the parties to go to, the dinners to have, Santa secrets..... all are fun and all loaded with the potential of chaos. Hopefully we can laugh at ourselves and enjoy the moment.

We had a great fun making the two new Christmas video cards. You will see holiday chaos was our inspiration..... gotta laugh.... gotta have fun...... it's Christmas. Ho Ho Ho!

TURKEYS REVERED ON THANKSGIVING

Turkeys are fascinating birds in my mind. Really I totally enjoyed having them in my presence during the time period my family lived on a small farm..... I must say that is until it came time to cull the males because they were trying to destroy each other over the lovely ladies.

Now you most likely are getting a hint of why we didn't have the farm for more than a couple years; our farm animals became our pets! We were "back-to-landers" - city folks who moved to the hills of Tennesse with the mission to support ourselves on our land, farm organically, and enjoy the good life being self sufficient. See the problems here! Well for one, I became a vegetarian and remained so for many years and to date have not eaten beef, pork or lamb since the day one of our cows was chosen to become many meals rather than a cow grazing in the green pastures. Chicken, turkey and seafood I have included in my diet but I do have an appreciation for the lives of these animals and the conditions in which they live. With these convictions, I find I steer away (pun intended) from creating cards depicting turkeys as meals rather than turkeys strutting their stuff. They are a symbol for the spirit of a day of thanks - Thanksgiving.

In parting I would like to share one of my turkey stories. Friends of ours pulled up into the yard one day in their pick up truck. The turkeys being very curious birds and not the totally ignorant birds as their reputation depicts, flew up on the roof of the cab and all leaned down sticking their heads into the cab to see just who these visitors were. Can you imagine having 4 turkeys greet you in such a manner. Was quite comical and endearing I must say.

Oh, and why did I choose this image? Easy..... this is how I feel at the moment! It feels like a Monday morning due to the holiday weekend, but it's a Tuesday morning for starter. I'm being pulled into so many directions but I do believe the dragon is pulling the hardest for here I am writing about a toy dragon biting the nose of a laughing girl.

Ummmmm....... funny e-card though and I always like sharing a little bit of craziness.... why should I keep all of it to myself! Check out the card with the music I have chosen for the card. CREEPY CRAWLY BIRTHDAY E-CARD

Talk about creepy crawly bugs and snakes this e-card has them all! They slither, they hop and they crawl to the birthday party for the celebration.

The process to make this card is called Stop Motion, perhaps you are familiar with it. A camera is used to take shots of a set or subject in which the elements or people move in tiny increments then like a flip book the images are put together in a motion program. This card was made in the same spirit and with the same process as the Bubbles Birthday Wishes card, my first stop motion ecard. ( See prior entry.)

What fun I had making this card. At the end of the card the snakes, little rat, and insects have party hats on. Now had I the need to explain what I was doing at the time, making play dough party hats for little plastic creatures, one would wonder what planet I was on. I was even amused by the task actually. This being my second Stop Motion card I was able to concentrate on the creative aspect of the card rather than being bogged down with all the technical aspects first time around thank goodness. There were definitely a lot of retakes getting the timing right and the movements as I intended them but the creative process was all fun.

Good news YES......of course..... bad news, well, can we pretend this conversation never happened, this guy never was smiling in my face ready to take pleasure in delivering devastating news. If bad news, he obviously has an issue with smiling at inappropriate times.....but hey, how many people do you know who do just that..... spew out earth shattering news with a smile on their face. Who am I to talk as I want to slip into the realm of denial. Let's ALL go to therapy and make the world a better place.

TREE OF CUPS!

It's Wednesday and time to take a coffee break. I thought this image would be perfect. Can you imagine riding down a country road and coming upon this tree! This is for real....maybe one day I will know the story behind the cups on the tree. Is very thought provoking. Have the cups been placed there by the property owner, by neighbors and friends, or casual passerbys? Do the cups have a meaning.

Now, the big question is, should I have a cup along with me to add to the tree the next time I take a little road trip in the Virginia countryside....maybe.

DANCING FINGERS - PARTY ON

Ever see the movie Tapeheads, a comedy that came out in 1988 with John Cusak and Tim Robbins? Most likely not...but then maybe you have for it has resurfaced and is on lists such as Films Outside the Loop.

Tapeheads is a story about two security guards with the dream of producing cool music videos with their first job being a commercial for fried chicken and waffles. Just about all scenes are tongue in cheek craziness. Sets were really fun and off the wall....I know I worked on them for a time period. As it was the first and for that matter the only movie I have ever worked on, I made all of $50. a week. You can only imagine how far that goes in a metropolitan city such as Los Angeles! Never will forget being out in pursuit of the ideal casket and making sure it was dust free and shining on our shoot or the perfect quirky fortune teller neon sign and crystal ball .......... the list goes on and on.

This all came of mind as I am now toting around my new video camera everywhere I go all these years later. Don't have dreams of making the music video to end all music videos but I am looking for footage to make amazing e-cards. I have to admit the first three e-cards I just made using video clips I shot, I do love and I loved the process!

Collaborating with my friend who jubilantly danced through the yard doing cartwheels for a lighthearted and fun birthday card was totally enjoyable albeit I had the easy job. She had the job of doing cartwheel after cartwheel as we searched for the right approach. Sure that made up for all those years in which she never did one cartwheel.

More fun to be had was working with my friend who has dancing fingers. We got a late start and the natural light was fading so had to step up the pace with getting costumes together and on those fingers. Adversity in creative projects usually pushes one into directions never intended and yet more times than not, into a more creative solution and thus it was with the two dancing finger cards I created.

The day has come.....VIDEO E-CARDS are on the site. Whew!

Ok, so it isn't Christmas or Valentines Day with tons of card sending going on, but it is Memorial Day, Flag Day, Father's Day, graduation, July 4th and glorious summer days!

Well, it is so glorious outside I would love to be basking in the warmth of the sun but alas, I have cards to create! I would say it is a draw (no pun intended).....I love making the cards as much as I love basking in the sun so more video e-cards are on the way. I've mastered new skills to produce the cards and find the animation programs fun albeit challenging.

There is always the element of excitement in the creative process when a door is opened to reveal a wealth of possibilities. The growing edge and desire to push the limits, to explore what is possible creatively and technically is forever present. Of course, one has to have mastered the technical aspect to be able to push the limits technically but within ones own capacity and level of expertise this still can be accomplished.

I explore ideas coming from the particular emotional state of being I am in at that moment in time. Just like writing in this blog. I can't say anything is planned ahead of time but rather being in touch with my thoughts and feelings provides the basis for the words I write or images I create. Well, as this is a commercial e-card site and I do have to direct my thoughts to particular holidays a percentage of the time and can't be making cards of the tropical island I would like to be on rather than the graduation cards I need to be making. Discipline certainly comes into play but and as I direct my thoughts to the task at hand fortunately I get find myself getting lost in the all consuming process of creating the visuals and selecting the music and thus transporting myself to another place. Time to get back to the project at hand. In the meantime above are a few of the video cards I have created. Click on the card link and enjoy!

My creative process to jump in and then figure out what I have to know sure challenged me this time! Video e-cards on E-MotionCards. Sounds rather easy doesn't it. Have the site programed, get a video camera and have-at-it. But wait......easier said than done!

Well, maybe for the technically inclined it is a piece of cake but I don't fall into that category unfortunately. I've never seen so many series of letters standing for things I don't have a clue about ever in the projects I've tackled....... ie: 2 VP 6 codec, AVI, .dv, .asf, .wmv, ITU 601, PAL and the list goes on. Now you see where I am with all of this ....still struggling.....well, actually only struggling a little bit at the moment. Wait until I get the new amazing video camera and here we go again.....but what fun that will be. Can't wait!

Thanks to suggestions from my web designer, friends and reading the manuals over my head, I was able to put together my first video card and much to my amazement it actually is working on the beta site. Surprised me I guess more than anyone else. Hours and hours and actually more hours were spent experimenting with checking this box and not that box or downloading one way then the other way. Mistake that really drives me nuts is when the video movie file renders out at 95 mgs or thereabouts when it should be 2 or 3 mgs and I don't have a clue which box was checked to cause that huge file to be created. Anyway, you get the gist of the frustration. When you see my first video e-card you will know I am smiling and I'm at least on top of the learning curve.....not completely on to the other side as there are so very many details to master...but close.

Now my mind is spinning with ideas for the video e-cards...... gee, wish there was a great costume house within a reasonable distance like Palace Costume in Los Angeles that has floors of fabulous period outfits where I could easily find fun garments for 50's type images or my favorite prop houses, Modern Props or Hand Prop House in LA that are loaded with quirky and unusual props. Nothing like being served a cappuccino by one of the sales personnel in Modern Props as he or she greets you in the lobby wearing a white space-like outfit. Well maybe a trip is in order for some photo shoots in LA! My bags are packed.....but wait, where is the video camera? OK all in time!

Inspiration from the Unexpected

As I was working on a line drawing of a rabbit for an Easter e-card, Michael, age 8, sat down beside me and asked for me to show him how draw a rabbit but seconds later he was totally involved in the creative process before I could utter a word. His first rabbit is one with great character and just walking along. Then he drew a second rabbit. His second rabbit is busy controlling the weather, creating the sun and a tornado. His third rabbit is a super hero saving the world. The fourth rabbit is a scientist with a Mac computer and vials of chemicals. In the meantime I am struggling with my rather staid boring rabbit trying to figure just how to animate it when I realized his rabbit is so much more interesting than mine! He proudly agreed to my request to use his rabbit rather than my own in the Easter card I'm working on.

Thankfully Michael didn't wait for a demonstration of how to draw a rabbit for rather than learning how to draw a boring rabbit he discovered it was his own vision and creativity that was so special.

ROAD TRIP to ALTERED REALITIES

A road trip down the south eastern coast of the U.S., just me and my buddy Potter, a royal standard poodle, was a delightful little adventure for the two of us. I enjoyed all of the truly visual gifts of nature and he enjoyed all of the scents of creatures unknown to him who had walked the paths before us.

Upon our return the photos taken in the travels transform in the computer by my desire to create altered realities and places of beauty to visit in the realm of the imagination at any given moment.

RED in Design - RED in February

How about RED! Well, it is February and RED is everywhere in the retail stores on Main Street or online cyber stores to create the spirit of Valentine gift giving. To foster the spirit I will share my creative endeavors in various mediums using the color RED. Above, The RED Violin is a photograph used as stock photography in several publications and has come to life in an E-MotionCard - The Violin.

Window Display - The top RED pepper spinning says "Do You Want"...... with the remaining spinning peppers plus peppers on the floor holding choices of: Denial - Bliss - Lies - Truth - Reality - Love - RED Peppers or Byblos (the designer of featured clothing). I was playful in spirit with this window installation and at the same time hoping it would be somewhat thought provoking.

The RED Shoes - Photograph used as Stock Image. For quite some time I got lost in the world of photographing small objects. Was a delightful world of discovery as you could only guess what the finished print would reveal. Of course this was in the day of the film cameras and One Hour Photo.

As a set decorator for major ad campaigns I had a huge range of assignments. This RED tent was one of my favorite challenges. The shoot was on a dry lake bed in California for several days with lots of props. I was responsible for renting a full size circus trapeze set, gigantic kites, and miscellaneous props with the most exciting assignment of designing a RED satin tent that could change shape for the various shots.

The RED Chair is another small world photograph used as a stock image in a variety of publications.

Baby Guess - 0 to 14- store windows were great fun to conceptualize and install. Here I chose the theme of a 50's like ice cream parlor for the kids. This corner is just a very small area in a large window display with lots of kids and babies having fun or taking their job very seriously as this little girl is! RED accents in the clothing and the set brought the scene to life.

DESIGN ON DISPLAY

The rock stars, the movie stars, producers and directors, the trendy, and the wanna-a-be-seen along with other celebrities of the world would pass through the doors of Maxfield, the Los Angeles boutique for avant-garde designer clothing while I was on the other side of the wall working in the window or searching through the racks for inspiration. Creating cutting edge, visual or thought provoking windows for the highest profile window in southern California, which I did in the mid 90's, was indeed a challenge as I changed the display once a week for two years! Previously I had designed the windows for the Baby Guess stores with story-themed displays often times playing out inner personal relationships with the baby and kid mannequins ........ well that is another story for another time.

Inspiration came from diverse sources - the usual and expected: museums and gallery shows in L.A .and N.Y., diverse prop rental houses, amazing weekly swap meets as well as pouring through periodicals of all sorts, art history books but many of my most successful windows were inspired by my inner world and the need to express feelings or angst, communicate beliefs or the desire to be experimental with materials and ideas. As the challenge was before me once a week, I had the opportunity to follow many paths and ideas, but oh, when those ideas didn't come easily wasn't exactly what I would call a good time.

The photos are of the two test windows I designed and installed in hopes of landing the gig. I had to do a lot of fast talking to even grab the opportunity to do a test window as my experience was based on children's clothing store windows which were at the opposite end of the spectrum of cutting edge and quite honestly I didn't fit the profile for an L.A. window designer. I was older than the young flamboyant designers, didn't have spiky or red flaming hair as one fan who had not previously met me expressed he expected. Indeed, it was a great adventure and growing experience as an artist.

First window (above):
After purchasing a mannequin and an outfit from a thrift store I painted the dressed guy solid light blue. From there I created a set in which I painted everything the same color except for several orange plastic fish. The finished design had a surreal storyline with the fish flying out of the bowl and all else oddly placed. The merchandise was a pair of leather shoes I was reluctantly given for fear the heat of the window would shrink the $1,000. pair of shoes! Oops.

For the second window I created a design in honor of the painter Frieda Kahlo whose work was being shown at the Los Angeles County Museum. After purchasing a mannequin I painted her face to resemble that of Frieda Kahlo and dressed her with thrift store clothes (except for a scarf that was merchandise), created the bird necklace as was in one of her paintings, painted an oil painting referencing several of her paintings and built the picture frame out of formcore. The window was a huge success.

Whatever this imaginary vessel is, it is fun and in this illustration it is sparking romance.

Can't you just hear a throaty voice over the sounds of the steam engine saying, "How about a............ light big boy?" as the charming captain catches the come hither look from his coy passenger as she lights his cigarette.

Well now wait a minute! What is our charming captain up to? The boat is beached with the anchor overboard in the sand and yet he is busy steering and the steam engine is puffing away.... must be steering his love to her heart! Oh.....the romance of yesteryear, have to love it!

Makes for a playful e-card!

A Bend in the Branch

A walk in the woods to feed the soul reveals a tree bare of leaves with crooked branches belonging to an ancient Chinese painting, a delicate flower searching for a ray of sunlight, or perhaps a cluster of berries of varying shades reminiscent of paintings of the past. The lowly weeds when isolated and viewed with new eyes can be a study in line with graceful curves or clashing angles.

Bits of nature would come home with me to become my inspiration. The resulting photographs would join a library of images from which I would draw upon to create mixed-media pieces reflecting my desire to connect with nature and a peaceful place within.

The process for this work involved digital images printed on a special material which was then applied a painted board in a way the background would be revealed. Paint strokes embellished the photographic images creating a blend of the two processes.

This body of work was shown in a 2 person gallery show in Asheville NC and Atlanta, GA along with all the weeds, flowers, pods, branches, vines, seeds and leaves pinned to the wall of the gallery. The inspiration and the finished pieces informed each other and I'm told the viewer.

A few of these pieces are included in the fine art postcard images on E-Motioncards site along with fine art pieces by other artists. The receiver of the e-cards will have the added pleasure of music selected by the sender to add to the experience of receiving the fine art images.

Colors of Guatemala

Endless visual inspiration. Senses wonderfully overwhelmed. Beautiful people with graceful gait, colors, textures, patterns, sounds, the fragrance of incense and flowers, cathedrals reaching up to the heavens as does the peak of the volcano, the ceremonies captivate and mesmerize, amazing artistry within every gaze.........all gifts to inspire the creative spirit. Guatemala is beckoning.

Harvey's Trees

Perhaps whizzing down this country highway one may not notice these wonderful cone shaped topiary trees majestically standing at the edge of the road amid the pastures, barns and sporadically placed homes. As I have a total fascination in the art of alternating nature in the name of beauty, I did come to a screeching halt in the tiny town of Bent Mountain, Virginia. With camera in hand and not believing my good fortune of finding such trees on the road between here and somewhere, I approached the property just as a car pulled into the driveway. Again my luck for I was about to learn the story behind Harvey's trees.

I was warmly received by a lovely woman who eagerly shared the story of her husband's dedication to the shaped trees. Harvey, planted small pine trees across the front of their property and started trimming them when they were but a few feet tall. As time passed the trees grew to towering heights but Harvey's passion never ebbed and he found ways to continue shaping the trees in spite of their height.

Last year Harvey had a stroke. Just as the height of the trees did not stop him from continuing to shape his stand of trees nor did the stroke. Harvey now has a partner in the endeavor of creating a beauty for those of us who whiz by on the country road to somewhere and just happen to catch a glimpse of the trees.

A smile crosses my face when I reflect on the trees and a sense of awe prevails for the man who is so very dedicated to his trees and his sense of beauty.

Harvey's trees became an e-card my site E-Motioncards for those who don't have the opportunity to happen upon them on the country road in Bent Mountain between here and somewhere.

Fly On Over

Halloween is a great time to surprise friends with scary and fun e-cards. No other holiday offers such freedom to be silly and frivolous in our choice of cards or who we send the cards to. It is the time for our playful spirits to come out frolic.

As for me, I have the same freedom in designing the cards. Last year one of the cards I designed was a funny card using my royal standard poodle as my alter ego wanting to be a "Rock Star". He didn't mind the wig and receiving my undivided attention, in fact he got bored and went to sleep giving me the opportunity for the final shot of the card.

This year, well, I dipped into the dark side of Halloween and created as scary a card I could; scary in a psychological sense using a fly as a metaphor for something that is disturbing and creepy. I never really have any idea of what I am going to do when I start out projects like this card. Rather than trying to come up with a great idea I look for objects or things that "speak" to me. Actually I learned long ago doing window display to pay attention to the things I am drawn to forthose things hold within them the seeds for conceptual ideas - solutions to my design task of the moment.

Walking down the aisle of halloween costumes I noticed one lone mask of an old woman that had the look of a great character rather than the grotesque. Nearby on a peg I noticed these creepy eye-balls that were just the correct size for the mask; some red pupils, some blue pupils. Next to them was a package of flys, yes plastic flys, why not. Perfect! It's a start....and oh those fake eyelashes are a must. The old woman spoke to me and from there I had the beginning of the card I was about to make.

All my years of experience in window display, set design and photography come into play when I create the motion cards. I found scarves and fabrics to use for the old woman, applied her eyelashes, put her in eyeballs and took photographs of her in varying positions. We spent awhile together as I became in awe of how photogenic she was. She definitely "spoke" to me and the flys, indeed they added the element of repulsion I was seeking to create a creepy Halloween experience.

Now the time had come to import the photographs into the Flash animation program, find suspenseful music and go to a place within to create a visually stunning and perhaps delightfully disturbing, if disturbing can at the same time be delightful, e-card.

Now I must admit I struggled with this part trying one thing then another never pleased with the outcome and starting over. I always am a bit envious of creative people who conceptualize and have everything planned out before they start. Unfortunately, I am not in that category. At times the path is revealed quickly but most often I work and rework the piece as ideas float into my consciousness. I'm as curious as to how it will unfold as anyone else would be.

My creepy Halloween card is almost complete and I reach the point to decide whether or not the flies fly into the old lady's mouth. I decide not to have that happen thinking perhaps maybe that is just "over the top". The next day I look at the card and know a few flies have to fly into her mouth, after all, didn't I want to make a really creepy card! Yes, so in go the flies into the old lady's mouth. A-la and there you have the story of "Fly on Over" - a Halloween card for my website E-Motioncards meant to be quite creepy! Enjoy.
